We don’t usually talk about non-Swiss watch companies on this blog but we’re making an exception because it’s Independence Day in the United States and the hottest watch company in the business is imported from Detroit.
The long dormant Motor City-based Shinola Replica Watch is back in a big way. Following a 2,500-piece test run online in March that sold out in a week, the watches are now going bricks-and-mortar retail with recent debuts in tony locations like Barney’s New York in June. Distribution deals with Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Nordstrom are also signed. Meanwhile, two standalone stores opened in Detroit (June 27th) and New York (July 1st).
The striking Made in America wristwatches retail from $495 to $725, including the Top Fake Shinola Runwell watch pictured above. Each watch comes with the words “Built in Detroit” engraved on the back of the watch case. Movements are largely Swiss made with other parts sourced from China or the United States. The no-frills timepiece is meant to be easy-to-read and slightly retro with a clean, 40 mm dial.
